Anthology Of Australian Music On Disc

Anthology Series III

An exciting new series of discs in this unique and valuable record of Australia's musical culture and creativity...

Series III brings nine new CDs to this prestigious reference collection, now totalling 30 discs of Australian composition and musical performance.

The Australian National University, celebrating its 50th Anniversary in 1996, is pleased to announce the release of the Third Series in the Anthology of Australian Music on Disc. Series III has been developed by a partnership between the Canberra School of Music (The Australian National University), the Australian Music Centre and the National Film and Sound Archive. The release has been funded by the Commonwealth Government through its National Priority Reserve Fund: Cultural Development Initiative.

Since its launch in 1989, the Anthology has developed as a standard reference collection of solo instrumental, electro-acoustic, and chamber music written by many of Australia's foremost composers and performed by Australian musicians. It has been widely acknowledged, critically and through national awards, as a unique contribution to the preservation and dissemination of Australian culture, as well as a prime source of material on composers, works and performers for music listeners, educationists, students and researchers.

These nine new discs feature foremost performers of new Australian music including soprano Marilyn Richardson, the Australia Ensemble, Perihelion, the Nova Ensemble, percussionist Michael Askill and pianist/composer Larry Sitsky. Works of leading composers Richard Meale, Peter Sculthorpe, Larry Sitsky, Nigel Westlake, Brenton Broadstock, Graham Hair and Carl Vine, as well as a host of younger composers, are complemented in this series by the works of an older generation of composers. A new dimension is introduced to the Anthology by the inclusion of heritage chamber music and film material. Dating from the 1940s-1960s, these recordings have been digitally remastered by the National Film and Sound Archive. Together with piano music from the pre-war period, this material invites us to reconsider the contribution that earlier composers and performers made to the development of Australian music.

The discs in this Third Series of the Anthology are produced in a limited-edition boxed set packaged to complement and enhance the boxed sets of the first two series. Each disc contains a booklet with notes on the composers, performers and the works. Discs may also be purchased singly. Limited numbers of sets of Series I (15 discs and the Handbook) and II (6 discs) are still available from the Canberra School of Music and Australian Music Centre .
